Coming home

From the time I can remember, my dad had this bible, but, when my mom died in 1988 and he moved here to Nashville in 89 and remarried, I never saw him carry it with him again. I'm sure I asked him about it, but by then he was living a new life, with a new wife, and since he wasn't out preaching every week, the need to carry it was just not there. Anyway, after all these years, the Lord sent it back to us...and I believe it's for this specific time. To remind us that the work my Father and Mother started is not done. The work they started is to be passed down and continue from generation to generation. Just Like Abraham, Issac, and Jacob.

I was getting ready for work last week and received a phone call a little after 8 am. The caller asked for me and then said. "I think I may have something that belongs to you. Are you Haskell Chesshir's son?" Of course when I heard my dad's name I was ready to hear her out. I came to find out that she worked for the previous owner of the "Lovelace Cafe". A famous landmark here in the Nashville area. It seems that dad had left his bible there many, many, years ago. The owner had sold the Lovelace many years ago and had packed quite a few boxes and had them stored. A few weekends ago, he was finally going through some boxes and came across my dad's bible. Dad had a few addresses written in it from when we were in Campbell California in 1966 and from when he and mom sort of retired to in Sierra Madre, Ca in the 80's.

The secretary did a google search and found our dad's memorial page. Through that she found me and after finding NBTA 's phone number and no one answered, she looked in the white pages and found my home phone number. What an incredible, emotional, phone call! Of course I went right over to pick up the bible.

So here it is. This bible has been over most the world, been used to bring the Gospel to thousands upon thousands of people and now, it's here with me. I can't believe what a precious treasure this is to us....but more than that, with what's going on in this world, it seems it's a reminder for us to carry on and continue to spread the Gospel. There's more work to be done and as Jesus said, "the harvest is ripe but the workers are few". What does that mean to me? Not sure yet...but, I'm sure I'll find out.

It is a goose bumps type story indeed. So glad you have it back Mark.

Thanks all! Yes, it is something worthy of calling a treasure. I've been reading the notes he wrote in the margins. I think he understood what he was reading!

Hmmmmm, maybe, just maybe your Dad and the Master Creator/Heavenly Father are planting some seeds "new" and reminiscent of "old". I can't wait to see how He waters and brings forth even greater fruit and purpose to your days. Sounds a little like your latter days will be blessed far greater than your former days. At least that is my prayer. Keep us posted on your Bible readings and notes from "DAD". Hmmmmm :o)

What a cool thing to have happen to you at this point in your life--where you are right now, how relatively recently your dad went home. You say you think he understood what he was reading. Do you agree with his take on his reading?

My dad didn't waste a lot of energy trying to change others in their doctrines, but would try to teach as he understood Scripture. He did spend time in caring for people, loving them, and serving them. Yes, I agree with his take!
