Fact or Fiction?

Scientists have found the oldest known rocks on Earth. They are 4.28 billion years old, making them 250 million years more ancient than any previously discovered rocks.

Earth formed about 4.6 billion years ago from a disk of gas and dust circling the sun. Remnants of crust from Earth's infancy are hard to come by because most of that material has been recycled into Earth's interior several times by the plate tectonics that continue to shape our planet's surface. (Full link of article below)

It's amazing that people still report stuff like this as fact. No mention that "we believe" or "the theory is"...it's now "Earth formed about 4.6 billion years ago from a disk of gas and dust circling the sun." My question is...How do they know this to be true?

This is, of course, amazing stuff. And I'm sure that it's somehow useful information to somebody. It rightfully holds a certain place in our interest. "How do they know this to be true?" is, however, a good and valid question. Another is "So?" Another might be "Who gives a crap?"

When i'm drivin' in my car
And that man comes on the radio
He's tellin' me more and more
About some useless information
Supposed to fire my imagination
I can't get no, oh no no no
Hey hey hey, that's what i say

Hey Mark,
My simple engineer brain doesn't allow me to fully understand the science and physics of dating old rocks etc. But, the scientists do agree on a start time for the Earth about 4.3 billion years ago. So that rock they found, was around when Earth time began. I think that is cool!

PS I hope you can make it to the party on Nov. 1st. It would be great to see you and Becky

good one Cody!

As far as dating the earth Dennis, every time there's a volcano and it petrifies animals and rocks...they find out that those dead things seem to date hundreds if not thousands years old when they know it had happened recently! I'm not too sure I can count on science knowing that the earth began 4.3 BILLION years ago!

As far as the 1st...I'm struggling on how to be there right now! I forgot an important prior commitment and now seeing if I can slide out of it without causing any heartache.
