The gathering

One of the daily events here at NBTA is the gathering of the birds. As you can see in the first picture there are tons of birds on the wires but what you don't see are the hundreds of other birds that are nestled into the top of the electric grid across the street. Usually around 4 or 5 in the afternoon the birds do a little exercise that is fascinating to watch. They form a cloud and start flying together rising and diving as if they were one bird and when they have finished they come down in a swirl that looks like a tornado and take their places on the steel rails. It's incredible to watch! Why they do this I have no clue...but it's like they are committed to a leader and whatever he/she does, they will follow. Hmmm. We could learn from this I think.

The next picture is a hawk or something like that...I really couldn't tell you what it is. He was much closer to me and when I got my camera he was already heading away. His wing spam seemed like it was over 6 or 7 feet. Huge dude!

Anyway...never thought I'd be a bird watcher.

My son hates birds. Actually, he will run from them if they get to close! It was Alfred Hitchcock's move that freaked him out about birds. He was home for the weekend and when I saw the hawk I got him to come outside and check it out. As soon as he saw it he said "Nice dad...I've gotta go back inside to do some studying!"
