Ethanol vs. Pure Gas

I was filling up my gas tank a month or so ago and a guy drove in next to me and asked if I knew where he could get gas without ethanol in it. The first thing that came out of my mouth was "Why? Isn't gas with ethanol better for your car?" He explained that he owned a gas station in Oklahoma and told me that if you use pure gas you will get much better gas mileage out of your car.

Most of you probably know that! I never thought about it. He had driven from Okalahoma with pure gas and got about 400 miles with a full tank. He stopped somewhere along the road and had to fill up with gas that had ethanol in it. After driving out another full tank of gas, he was only able to go 300 miles! That's 1oo miles less!

So since then, I have been doing a test with my Ford Explorer. I filled up with pure gas and got about 340 miles out of my 20 gallon tank. Then I filled up with gas that had ethanol in it and got right at 320 miles. Not a huge difference but, a bit better with pure gas. I did this test 3 times and if was pretty much the same each time.

I've come to the conclusion that driving in the city with all the stop and go driving doesn't make much difference which gas you use...pure gas is always a little more expensive too. But, I would assume that if you are traveling a lot on the freeway you would probably see a huge difference. Especially if you drive the speed limit or a bit slower.

Test over...just thought it was interesting.

What stations sell "just gas". I had not heard about MPG difference. Thanks Mark

Dennis, we have some "Marathon" stations here that sell just gas...I would think if you googled it for your city you would find which stations sell it up there.

If you are still traveling, this would be a great time to test it out and let us know! mark

I drove a hybrid Toyota Camry to DC. I filled up once near DC and once near Johnson City. I wonder how it would have gone with "just gas."
